Entangled gray whale freed after dramatic marathon rescue effort

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

A whale-watching adventure late Friday off Southern California developed into a dramatic and prolonged rescue effort after a young Pacific gray whale was spotted trailing about 50 feet of a commercial fisherman’s gill-net. A trained disentanglement team led by Dave Anderson was successful in freeing the 30-foot whale Saturday evening off Dana Point in what the team described as a miraculous event (see video below for some of the action).

Photo: AFPThere is a court case currently taking place which could have a serious impact on the future protection of endangered and threatened species in the US. The Humane Society of the United States and the Wild Fish Conservancy have filed a complaint and a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS). This action follows a decision by the NMFS to allow State Wildlife Agencies to kill up to 460 federally protected California sea lions over the next five years. The restraining order was denied this morning in US District Court. The court will allow the NMFS to kill California Sea Lions while waiting for the full case to be heard.

Watch Melissa Sehgal in an interview with Jane Velez-Mitchell live from Taiji, Japan tonight Friday, March 16th at 7pm EST on HLN LIVE.

Commentary by current Cove Guardian leader Melissa Seghal

Melissa SeghalMelissa SeghalI have been in Taiji, Japan for a few months now and I have witnessed hundreds of dolphins slaughtered for consumption and taken captive for human entertainment. It is barbaric and beyond words to describe the atrocities that happen during the dolphin drive season.
