Just ran across this on the Care2 Website:
The coal-extraction process of mountain top removal involves the destruction of mountains of all sizes for mining purposes. This leads to vast amounts of land desroyed — devestating ecosystems and local wildlife.
The damage has already taken a major toll — the U.S. EPA estimates that over 700 miles of healthy streams have been completely buried by mountaintop removal and thousands more have been damaged. In the Appalacia area, the harmful effects of mining have been said to even cause damage to local residents and animals, as water streams are constantly being contaminated as a result of the process. Several environmentalists, and those affected by the mining process, wonder how long the destruction will continue before something is done to prevent further damage.
